Afghan lamb meatballs (korme kofta)



We make korme kofta for Nowruz – New Year – along with many other dishes, including colourful rice, lamb curry and haft mewa (seven fruits). Nowruz, meaning "new day", is the first day of spring (the vernal equinox), but in Afghanistan, the festival can last for two weeks. It’s a time of good luck, fortune and new starts.

Ingredients


Meatballs
  • 1 kglamb mince
  • 2onions, finely chopped
  • 2 tpsgarlic, crushed
  • 1 tbsptomato paste
  • ½bunch coriander leaves, chopped
  • 1egg
  • ½ tspground turmeric
  • 1 tspsweet paprika
  • 1 tsppepper

Sauce
  • 2 tbspolive oil
  • 2onions, finely chopped
  • 625 mlwater
  • 1 tbsptomato paste
  • ½ tspground turmeric
  • ½ tspsalt
  • 4potatoes, quartered
